Criteria for Entry
Jackson School is a State Government school for students with Intellectual Disabilities.
For a student to be eligible to attend Jackson School, they need to have a diagnosed Intellectual Disability. This does not preclude other disabilities such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Down Syndrome or Global Developmental Delay (GDD), but they must be assessed as having a Full Scale IQ of between 50-70 and be deemed to have a mild intellectual disability. Students also need to be able to show a prior history of needing ongoing curriculum support.
Students must be aged between 5-18 years to attend Jackson School.
The assessment must include a Vineland-II as well as a cognitive assessment such as the WISC-IV or WPPSI-IV. All assessments must be current. For cognitive assessments, this means they must be no more than two years old. For Vinelands this means they must be no more than one year old. Speech Assessment Reports and Occupational Therapy Reports must also be no more than one year old. Assessments must indicate that the student meets the Department of Education & Training (DET) criteria for support under the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD).
For students wishing to enter from a mainstream school, the referring school is responsible for having assessments done if they are required.
Students new to the system such as a prep or student from interstate or from the Catholic or Independent School system will also require a current cognitive assessment and an Educational Needs Questionnaire (ENQ) to be completed.
Copies of letters from doctors, paediatricians, occupational, speech or physiotherapists relating to the student’s disability or medical condition are also of assistance in completing assessments and applications. In the case of a student from the Catholic or Independent system, evidence of prior funding is required.
If all criteria is met, the school will send an Entry Request for Jackson School to DET on behalf of the student.
